ASPCA Poison Control Center, an operating division of the ASPCA, is the only animal-oriented poison control center in North America. The center is staffed by veterinarians, including board-certified veterinary toxicologists. The specially-trained staff provides assistance to pet owners and makes specific diagnostic and treatment recommendations to veterinarians pertaining to toxic chemicals and dangerous plants, products or substances. The Kansas Humane Society (KHS) takes in more than 13,000 animals each year by citizens who are unable or unwilling to care for them. The Humane Society currently finds homes for 70 percent of the animals made available for adoption. Most of the animals it takes in are dogs and cats, but it does accept other small pets such as guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and birds.
