Wichita has truly always been home to me - I have lived in other places, during college and my first veterinary job, but I always knew I would return. Wichita is a wonderful place to call home: all the benefits of a city, amazing food, entertainment, engaging "fests", and yet so close to beautiful nature. Just drive 30 minutes north to the glorious Flint Hills which are beautiful during every season. This Kansas girl believes everyone should be able to experience the beauty of the rippling golden wheat in early June! We also have the best sunsets!

From doctors to support staff, every team member is essential for us to provide 24/7 quality veterinary medical care. I absolutely love being a part of VESHW! I love that I get to work for a hospital that is truly about saving animals. We offer several different payment options for our clients and have a shock and pain program for owners in financial crisis. We also work very closely with local rescues to give animals another opportunity to receive medical care if their owners are unable. I love that this is an emergency clinic and you never know what is going to come in.

Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital of Wichita has grown, not only in numbers but with an amazing new building. The new hospital is a huge upgrade and much needed for Emergency and Critical Care which has taken our care to the next level.
I get to work beside some of the hardest working humans I have ever met. They give it their all each and every day, now more than ever. The dedication and patient advocacy is like nothing I have ever seen. I am lucky to be a part of it and can't help but be proud of our work and level of care our patients receive.

Our Specialist, Dr. Douglas Winter
Dr. Douglas Winter is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (DAVDC) who has been with our team since 2009. He is committed to enriching the health and well-being of animals by improving their oral health. Dr. Winter is an integral part of our team and our referring community, regularly providing demonstrations and lectures throughout the tri-state area.
Our Specialist, Dr. Douglas Winter
Dr. Douglas Winter is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (DAVDC) who has been with our team since 2009. He is committed to enriching the health and well-being of animals by improving their oral health. Dr. Winter is an integral part of our team and our referring community, regularly providing demonstrations and lectures throughout the tri-state area.
Our Specialist, Dr. Ralph Millard
Prior joining Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital of Wichita, Dr. Ralph Millard was a Staff Surgeon at a large private practice in the Kansas City area. He was previously a Clinical Assistant Professor in Small Animal Surgery at Purdue University in Indiana. He has many years of clinical experience and has authored numerous book chapters and peer reviewed scientific publications. He is proficient at numerous aspects of veterinary surgery including knee (TPLO) and other joint/ligament injuries, complex and open fractures, minimally invasive methods of fracture repair and a multitude of general soft tissue/oncologic surgical procedures.
He is Board-Certified in Small Animal Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons-Small Animal.
Our Specialist, Dr. Heather Towle Millard
Prior to joining Wichita Specialty and Emergency Hospital, Dr. Heather Towle Millard spent 7.5 years as a Staff Surgeon at a large private practice in the Kansas City area. She previously spent six years as a Surgery Instructor and Clinical Assistant Professor of Small Animal Surgery at Kansas State University (3 years) and Purdue University (3 years) where she taught surgery to veterinary students, interns, and surgical residents, while conducting research, writing numerous book chapters and articles, and teaching lectures/laboratories.
Her surgical interests include any soft tissue surgery, particularly reconstructive surgeries, oncologic surgeries, minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopy, ureter stent placement and SUB placement (re-routing from kidney to urinary bladder), knee (TPLO) surgery for torn CCL (cranial cruciate ligament), and congenital orthopedic conditions.
She is a Board-Certified in Small Animal Surgery and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons-Small Animal since 2008.
