A Jumbo-Sized Success

We’re thrilled to share an incredible story of teamwork, expertise, and dedication! Last month, the Sedgwick County Zoo faced a unique challenge when Callee, one of their male African elephants, needed urgent dental care. During a sparring event with Titan, another male elephant, Callee broke one of his tusks at the pulp cavity. The injury caused visible bleeding, and the risk of infection and further damage required swift action.

That’s where our board-certified veterinary dentist, Dr. Doug Winter, stepped in. With specialized training in zoo and wildlife dentistry, Dr. Winter performed a procedure akin to a root canal to repair Callee’s tusk. Since elephant tusks are anatomically similar to teeth, Dr. Winter was able to apply his advanced knowledge and skills to help this incredible patient.

This monumental effort was a true collaboration. The Elephant Care Team, Veterinarian staff, and even the Maintenance crew played crucial roles in supporting the procedure. Adding to the excitement, the zoo was hosting members of the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians during their post-conference trip for National Vet Tech Week. Vet techs from across the country had the rare opportunity to observe part of the procedure firsthand.

We’re happy to report that Callee is recovering beautifully, and this success wouldn’t have been possible without the combined efforts of everyone involved. Moments like these highlight the power of veterinary medicine to make a difference—even for patients as extraordinary as Callee!
